Ri Jong Hyok (pictured) in his early 30s works at the acupuncture and moxibustion department of the Ryongsong District People’s Hospital in the capital city of Pyongyang.
Being conscious that he takes care of the people’s life and security and their happiness, he is devoting himself for the treatment of patients.
Busy as he was with his work, he conducted a profound study of Tonguibogam, Four Kinds of Physical Constitution and Treatment by Acupuncture and Moxibustion and other encyclopedias of traditional Korean medicine and of the trends of developing modern medical science. At the same time, he improved his practical abilities by delving into the achievements brought about in the treatment by his predecessors.
In the course of this, he treated tens of patients suffering from hemarthritis, autism and infertility.
Among them is Kim Un Ha who lived in the same village with him from her childhood. Later, she started her career as a wrestler at the Amnokgang Sports Club, whereas he became a student at Pyongyang University of Medical Sciences.
One day when he was working as a doctor after graduation, he came to know that the girl returned home as she was a paraplegic caused by acute myelitis and polyneuroradiculitis.
It was really heartrending for him to think that the girl, who had been full of dreams, had to spend her whole life as a person with disability. So, he made up his mind to take full responsibility for her treatment.
His untiring and persevering efforts bore fruit; she came to walk on her own feet again after receiving medical service from him.
Later, she got married to him and gave birth to a daughter.
Ri would leave home for medical treatment regardless of the time. As for this, she would say: “When he promised to tie the knot with me, he said he regarded it as the happiest choice of his life to be a doctor in charge of the people’s health and their life and security. Living with him, I found that he finds his pleasure and happy time in meeting his former patients in good health with full of vigor.
He has written tens of papers dealing with the achievements he has made while making devoted efforts for the patients. These papers have been highly appreciated at the National Exhibition of Sci-Tech Achievements in Public Health and the national sci-tech festivals.
