Let Us Prioritize Health and Rights of Women!

By Yang Song Il, section chief of the Population Centre of the DPRK

Many countries are now taking blockade measures to cut off or restrict the inflow of persons and goods and increasing the term, due to the lasting spread of COVID-19 pandemic. And because of the shortage of various medical materials, the reproductive health service for women in developing countries is in difficult conditions.

This being the situation, the UN Population Fund set the theme of World Population Day (July 11) for this year as “Rights and Choices are the Answer: Whether baby boom or bust, the solution lies in prioritizing the reproductive health and rights of all people”.

The Fund is calling on all countries across the world to take realistic measures to fully provide the reproductive rights of women and actively implement them to cope with the aftereffects of worldwide spread of the pandemic.

The DPRK government, which gives the highest and absolute priority to the people’s safety and their wellbeing, is paying special attention to ensuring the women’s reproductive health and rights.

People’s hospitals in Pyongyang, provinces, cities and counties, provincial maternity hospitals and obstetrical and gynecological departments of county people’s hospitals and first-aid service facilities in particular, are intensifying the work for promoting the health of pregnant women and nursing mothers.

The country ensures that the mass media give wide publicity to the efforts for preventing the spread of COVID-19, including wearing masks, keeping social distance and disinfecting hands and objects, and that medical workers in charge of households regularly conduct medical check-up of residents, pregnant women and nursing mothers in particular, with a sense of responsibility.

The emergency campaign for preventing pandemic is now being prolonged on in our country, but the state measures to ensure the reproductive health and rights of women are being implemented to the letter.
