To win the Olympic Games is the dream of all sportspeople and a pride of each country and nation.

In the past, sportspeople in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea proved successful in shooting, boxing, wrestling, weightlifting, judo and artistic gymnastics of the Olympic Games.

Kye Sun Hui Startles World Judo Circles

Kye Sun Hui, judoka of the DPRK, won a gold medal at the women’s 48-kilogram judo of the 26th Olympic Games held in Juche 85 (1996) to the admiration of the world people.

At that time, foreign mass media reported the news of the finals between Kye Sun Hui and a Japanese judoka known as the world superstar, saying the former defeated the latter beyond expectations. They praised Kye Sun Hui as a “16-year-old unknown superstar”, “star of the world women’s judo”, “wonderful figure that amazed the world judo circles” and “judoka on top of the Olympics with a bang”.

Kye Sun Hui won four consecutive victories at the World Judo Championships held in 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2007. She also stole the show at a number of international games including the Asian Judo Championships in 1997 and 1999 and the 13th Asian Games.

She was awarded the title of People’s Athlete in Juche 85 (1996), the title of Labour Hero of the DPRK in Juche 90 (2001), and the Kim Il Sung Prize in Juche 92 (2003).

She is now active as the head coach of judo at the Moranbong Sports Team in the capital city Pyongyang.
