A Story about the Name of the Country

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea was founded on September 9, Juche 37 (1948).

At the beginning of the last century Korea was reduced to a colony of the Japanese imperialists. Since the great leader Kim Il Sung liberated the country and founded the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, it could fully demonstrate its dignity and might as an independent socialist state, the people-centred socialist state.

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea !

The name of the country represents an independent character of Korea to maintain the line of independence in the state building and activities and solve everything by her own strength.

It also reflects the democratic and popular character of the state. The word “democratic” represents the immediate task and fundamental purpose of the Korean revolution as well as the desire of the popular masses for freedom and happiness. The word “people” reflects that it is a people’s country where the people are masters of the state and society and everything serves the people.

The name of the DPRK is associated with the noble intention of Kim Il Sung to build a people’s country, a dignified independent power.

One day in early July Juche 37 (1948), Kim Il Sung called officials to discuss an issue of deciding on the name of the country.

He said: The country’s name–the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea–enjoyed absolute support and approval of the entire people through the discussion of constitution. When founding the Party, we presented its political line that a democratic people’s republic is founded and have made strenuous efforts for its realization. In order to decide on the name of the country properly it is necessary to consider both the fundamental goal and immediate task of the revolution and meet the actual conditions of the country.

When some impure elements asserted that the country’s name should be the people’s republic or democratic republic without the word of people, Kim Il Sung made clear that it is most rational to name the country the “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea”.

He decided on the name of the country thoroughly on the independent and popular stand.

This is how the name of the country came into being.

The immortal exploits of Kim Il Sung, the founder of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, father of socialist Korea and eternal President, for nation building will shine forever along with the sacred name of the glorious motherland–the DPRK.
