Mt. Paektu is one of the six famous mountains of Korea.
The area of Mt. Paektu has unique fauna adapted to the severe climate and peculiar geological and geographical environment of highlands. It covers the vast land and presents different ecological environment according to regions with high altitude, different temperature and typical plant distribution.
The area consists of the zone of boreal coniferous trees including larch and Abies nephrolepis, mixed forest of white birch, aspen, birch and other trees and the grassland of subalpine shrubs.
Living in the thick forests of Mt. Paektu are the Korean tiger, brown bear, sable and other wild animals and one hundred and tens of kinds of birds. There grow various kinds of fish such as Chonji char in Lake Chon on Mt. Paektu.
The area of Mt. Paektu forming a natural zoo with many species of animals has a lot of rare and beneficial animals to be specially protected.
The Korean tiger, black grouse, pika, red deer, deer, Chonji char, sable and other animals have been designated as living monuments.
